One of the most common situations you’ll face as a stylist is a client saying, “I honestly have no idea what my style is.”This isn’t a problem — it’s actually an opportunity.Clients who feel unsure are the ones you can help the most, because they’re starting from a blank canvas and genuinely want direction.
Here’s what to do when a client doesn’t know their style yet and how to guide them with confidence.

Start With Their Lifestyle, Not Their Aesthetic
When a client is unsure of their style, skip the trend talk for now.Begin with the basics:
What does their week look like?
How do they need to show up for work?
What environments are they dressing for?
What pieces do they reach for most often?
A style identity is built on daily habits and lifestyle — not Pinterest predictions.
Help Them Understand What They Feel, Not Just What They Like
Most clients know what feels “off” in their wardrobe. They just don’t know how to articulate it yet.Ask questions like:
“What outfits make you feel your best?”
“Which pieces never get worn, and why?”
“How do you want to feel in your clothes?”
Their answers reveal patterns, preferences, and emotional cues that shape their style direction.
Create a Clear but Flexible Style Direction
Instead of giving them a single label (“classic,” “edgy,” etc.), create a simple phrase that guides your work together. For example:“Clean, structured neutrals with soft feminine details.”This gives clarity without boxing them into something that doesn’t feel like them yet.
Teach as You Go
When a client is unsure of their style, education builds trust.Explain why certain silhouettes work, how to balance proportions, or how to create outfits from their existing pieces.Small teaching moments help them understand themselves — and see your expertise clearly.
